    Anglo-French consortium to develop anti-UAV system

    A consortium of British and French companies has signed an agreement to develop a counter-unmanned air vehicle system.

    The UAV Watch and Catch System (UWAS) radar-based system will be developed by JCPX Development, DSNA Services, Aveillant, Skysoft and ENAC, and will detect and track UAVs that weigh less than 25kg (55lb).

    The system will be offered in both mobile and fixed configurations, while the consortium claims that the technology that will be incorporated is already compliant and certificated by civil aviation authorities, and will be a turnkey system based on Aveillant’s H24 radar system.

    H24 will be able to detect, identify and track small UAVs at ranges up to 5nm (9km), and “has the ability to retrospectively derive the point of origin to facilitate arrest and prosecution of those responsible”, the companies say.

    Additionally, a ground-based optical tracking system will be incorporated, plus one or more tracing, tracking and interception vectors and a command and control monitoring interface.

    UWAS joins a raft of other similar offerings that are coming to the market for this application, including the Anti-UAV Defence System (AUDS) from Blighter Surveillance Systems, Chess Dynamics and Enterprise Control Systems. Thales is also involved in a French national research agency-run 18-month development programme, Angelas, as well as developing in-house technology of this kind.

    The AUDS consortium and Thales are both understood to have demonstrated technology for the French Ministry of Defence that has a competition to acquire a system to counter unwelcome UAVs flying near critical infrastructure and above crowds.

    Drone kullanımının ülkelerin hava kuvvetlerince ciddi anlamda silahlı ve silahsız olarak kullanılmaya başlaması, önlem için anti-drone sistemlerini ve silahlarını da beraberinde getiriyor. Hem taşınabilir hem de yerleşik olarak hazırlanan anti-drone sistemlerinin silah ayağı, İran ordusu tarafından da kullanılmaya başlamış gibi görünüyor.

    Tasnim News tarafından yayınlanan bir görselde, İran askerinin anti-drone silah ile hedef almış hali yansıtılıyor. Bilindiği gibi anti-drone silahlar için hem elektromanyetik hem de doğrudan ateşleme ile savunma ve saldırı yapılıyor. İran ordusunun kullandığı söz konusu bu anti-drone silahının, elektromanyetik tarafta yer aldığı aktarılıyor.

    Şu an için ortaya çıkan bu anti-drone silah yapısı ile ilgili çok detaylı bilgi ortaya çıkmış değil. Lakin, anlaşılan o ki ordu envanterinde anti-drone silahlandırmayı sağlayan çalışmalar, İran tarafında da kendini gösteriyor.

    The Israeli company which produces the Iron Dome rocket defense system has released a new video documenting yet another enemy implement which the platform can help guard against.

    The Defense Ministry announced earlier this month that after running a series of experimental tests on the Iron Dome, it had succeeded in upgrading its operational capabilities in order to confront future hostilities.

    In conjunction with Rafael, the new upgrades were designed "to expand and improve the performance capabilities of the system in the face of an unprecedented range of threats," a press statement from the Defense Ministry read.

    The Iron Dome was originally designed to defend against rockets at a range of 4-70 km, but the IDF has continually improved the platform's capability since its deployment in 2011.

    Each battery consists of a mini multi-mission radar manufactured by Israel Aerospace Industries and three launchers, each equipped with 20 interceptors called Tamirs.

    The radar enables Iron Dome operators to predict the impact site of the enemy rocket and decide not to intercept it if it is slated to hit an open area. Each interceptor costs between $50,000-100,000 and usually two are fired at rockets slated for interception.

    Air force personnel staffing Iron Dome batteries intercepted more than 500 Gazan rockets heading to Israeli built-up areas during the war with Hamas in Gaza last year in Operation Protective Edge, successfully protecting Israel's most populated and vulnerable cities.
